High School For The Adult Learning Environment Of A...

During my junior and senior year of high school, I took a leap of faith and enrolled into the Running Start program through Clark College. This was one of the challenging decisions of my life. Running Start is a unique opportunity afforded to juniors and seniors in our state, and also a monumental challenge for any High School student who chooses to take part in the program. The challenges include leaving the rigidity and comfort of the High School for the adult learning environment of a community college, becoming a more active participant in one’s own learning, working hand in hand with students and staff of all ages and backgrounds, and more. Making the decision was very intimidating. Specifically, I was intimidated by taking college level math classes, as all throughout my schooling; math has been a never ending struggle. My struggles with math reach back as long as I can remember, but they all really materialized for the first time in fifth grade. In spite of being an oth erwise strong student, I was really having a tough time keeping pace in math class. It was at this time my parents and teachers intervened in my education and I was issued an Individual Educational Plan. I was moved to a math class in the special education department, and received one-on-one tutoring. While from an adult point of view this may seem like a beneficial change, for a student closing in on middle school and trying to fit in with friends, it was a huge bow to my confidence.
